Sammamish Football Luau

On Saturday evening about 50 Sammamish High School football players will don their jerseys and lavalavas to perform a special Hawaiian dance as part of the entertainment during the team's annual Totem Football Spring Luau. The luau is one of the team's many fundraisers to help pay for football camp this summer.

The public is invited to join the team for authentic Hawaiian food, to see Coach Rylen Akana perform as well as enjoy traditional Hawaiian dancers at the event held at the Lake Sammamish Four Square Church on June 11 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. The cost is $20 a ticket.

Gridiron Club Co-President Julie Sullivan explained that not every family can simply write a $250 check for the camp. As a result the team has worked all year to raise scholarship money at various fundraisers such as manning the school concession stand and car washes. The team has also sold lots of Totem Rush Coffee for the cause.

"We have gone to all this work because we feel camp is an important bonding experience and after several years of rebuilding the team, the coach feels the boys are ready," said Sullivan, whose son Joey is a senior and plays safety on defense and wide receiver on offense. "We also feel the boys benefit from experiences where they come into contact with men who serve as positive role models."
